One day I wanted to freshen up the house a bit so I took out one of my candles. I found the wick completely buried by the wax and unable to burn. It was then that I realized I should have made sure that the wick was centered and above the wax at all times, so that the candles life would have burned evenly throughout its entire duration. I also should have shaken the melted wax, being sure it all settled evenly. Determined to relight the candle I began to chisel away the wax that had buried the wick and continued until the wick was a significant distance above the wax. When relighting there were still some areas that needed to be removed here and there but eventually the candle was able to burn continuously without being put out by seeping wax. The beautiful candle that was intended to bring fragrance and light to the room was now able to do so. Not only for just that one day did it shine. No, it shined evenly throughout the rest of its duration. Our lives are like that candle and Jesus is the wick. If we don't have Jesus at the center of our lives and higher than everything else things begin to build up and eventually they seep down in and put out the light of Jesus making it hard for others to see Jesus in us. The aroma of Christ and the fragrance of the knowledge of Him no longer flow from us.
For 2 Corinthians 2:14-15 says, "But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. For we are to God, the aroma of Christ among those being saved and those who are perishing."
Each and every one of us burns differently. Some evenly, some a slight chisel here and there, some have had several times that they needed to chisel away the things in their lives. All of us at various times in our lives need God to shake us gently to be sure to move everything evenly. He nudges us during our devotions with Him and His word, through messages we hear from leaders at church, or during worship time at service He may send a move of His Spirit to bring change into our lives. There are many ways that He shakes us into the changes that cause Christ's light to burn bright in us so that we may be a fragrance to all those we come into contact during our lives on the earth our temporary home. Are there things in your life that have been placed above Christ? Things that need to be chiseled away keeping them from seeping in? Maybe His light has gone out in you? I have good news for you! God has a light that never goes out and He is ready to relight that fire within you. Let Him continue to work in you.

p.s. Just a note to let you know that today I use Mia Bella candles and this doesn't happen anymore, but the principals here still apply to life. It was worth struggling with the old candles just for the word picture I received alone. :)
